Importantly, this world shown has to be actual reality - it's the only reality where the Enthralled are shown for what they really are (thralls to fancy VR headseats, I guess?) and it's extremely gritty and real compared to all others. The video shows the final leg of the Rebel's journey - fighting against the bodies of those still enslaved by the simulation in an effort to reach some piece of it and take action against it. In either case, in her freedom, she takes Matt's call to arms and leads what's presumably a substantial rebellion force (hence the explosions) against the Simulation. Presumably, the protagonist of Dig Down ("The Rebel") either listens to the call and frees herself and some others, or was never imprisoned to begin with. There's no real way to say, one way or another - but upon final analysis, the last explanation seems the most likely. Like a manifestation of an idea of the collective interlinked consciousness of the Enthralled, fighting against the simulation on their behalf.

It's very possible that he literally is the Thought Contagion itself. He could even be an errant part of the Simulation, some odd program which believes in helping humanity. Alternately, he could be part of the development and maintenance crew for the Simulation itself. It's difficult to say exactly what Matt is - it's possible that he was one of the Enthralled, and hadn't yet managed to completely break his shackles. Dig Down, and be free - discover that the world is a simulation. Through some unknown means, Matt has begun broadcasting: "Dig Down." It's a call to arms for anyone who's trapped in the simulation, and anyone still outside it - fight against it, and free yourself. Either way, humanity is hypnotized ("The Enthralled").īut the hypnosis is not complete. If you want to have fun, maybe imagine it's the same totalitarian government that shows up in some of the videos for Drones.

Computers control humanity through The Simulation, via some unknown perpetrator. To begin explaining what is even going on, Dig Down (and, subsequently, all other events for the rest of the series) is set in the dark future. Pretty straightforward, you could've guessed it. Here's the chronological order to watch the videos in: If we do get one more, I'm reasonably sure it will be a) a prologue to Matt first suspecting simulation theory, or B) a conclusion/epilogue, post-simulation to help tie everything together and have it all make sense.)

(This analysis assumes that Algorithm is the final music video for the album, or at least, the final one for the story. I've tried to make sense of it as best I can.
